The Top 5 Locations In Tampa For Photography Sessions | Alison Winterroth Photography

July 28, 2014

So you’re looking for a great spot to take those family pictures- a backdrop to compliment your family’s personality.  A lot of things can affect a portrait session, the photographer being probably the most important. If you pick well, they will know how to help you choose your outfits, use the light to their advantage and the location to enhance your photographs.  A style of  location can make such a big difference for your family portraits and can set the mood for the whole session.  Lets go over some of the options, shall we?

1)  University of Tampa

UT is the best of both worlds- a little bit urban, a little natural. It is perfect for a good variety in your family photography session, not to mention it is iconic in the architecture of Tampa! It is such an instantly recognizable and beautiful spot!

2) Curtis Hixon Park

If you want great views of Tampa, the river and University of Tampa all in one place, Curtis Hixon Park is the place to go! They have great open spaces, mosaics from the Glazer Children’s Museum and city views. Just be careful because this tends to be a busy place especially on the weekends. I have witnessed sunset yoga, a wedding reception and an impromptu soccer game going on all at the same time!

3) Natural Light Studio Session

This might be my favorite place to photograph families. The studio where I photograph newborn, family and maternity sessions has a bed and furniture, so it looks just like a home without the stress of having to actually shoot in your home. You don’t have to worry about cleaning up, keeping your sheets white or even have the perfect décor. It has the added benefit of allowing the session to really focus on you and your family since the space is very neutral- you also don’t have to match your outfits to your red walled bedroom. Easy peasy!

4) Beaches

Of course, Florida is the land of beaches and they are a gorgeous place to have your session. If you do it right there can be a lot of variety in a beach session. My personal favorite beaches for interesting photographic variety are Picnic Island and Fort Desoto. If you find the right place, you can have greenery, sea oats and water all in the same session. It makes for gorgeous images! All of the following photographs were taken within 1 hour at Picnic Island.

5) Secret Location

These are fun! All photographers enjoy finding those locations that make them unique and interesting. I’m not going to tell you where mine are, but I am sure whoever you choose will have some special places as well.  Here are some images from my favorite secret locations of all time! Also, let me say that these are all my opinion! I have shot at a lot of places in the Tampa Bay area, and this is by no means an all inclusive list. Part of the fun of a session is picking a place that has meaning to you, so be creative and feel free to add your input to your photographer! Good luck with your fall sessions and happy location scouting! Tampa Bay is a beautiful area with a ton of variety.
